Articles Thoughts on why doing design is important.

Design Thinking is dead. Long live Design Doing.

I keep seeing posts proclaiming Design Thinking is dead. Maybe the term itself is dead, but the actions and activities behind it certainly will live on.

But maybe there's been too much hype and fixation on the upfront part of the design process in recent years.

The ideas, concepts and even the process itself has been over-celebrated and the actual design craft has been increasingly overlooked.

The craft that delivers the reality of the ideas. The time-consuming act of setting up durable grids, the pixel pushing, creating the assets, the components and the act of bringing it all together in experiences that make sense and deliver both joy and bottomline business value.

Good design craft, like any other craft, needs experience, needs skills, needs tools, needs education, needs grit, needs focus and most of all, needs to be done!

Let's stop focusing on whether Design Thinking is dead or not and instead focus on celebrating the hard work of the Design Doers, the ones that make it happen.

Let's celebrate Design Doing.

“Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless.”

- Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics
